I'm glad to hear people already talking about scouting for next year..... in order to actually follow through though, proper planning is a consideration. So since I am such a methodical Virgo I thought I would help people who are talking on this forum about scouting to help plan it out.... thoughts to consider:
1) Do you have a car or a friend with a car that will give you the key? Start asking your friends now to plan on camping out in the woods for a week or month in July. Get a core group of people together who can be there the whole time, to keep newcomers informed of where has been scouted already, and to see any good sites for comparable reference. Anyone who wants to help in that area but can only come for a day or few can go meet the core group.
2) In order to get some good scouting done, and make it worth your while, you will be in the car driving down roads for several hours each day. How will you pay for the fuel? Start saving or taking collections now. Put up a donation jar at your next party. There is no gas fund for scouters.
3) Do you have a job? How long in advance do you have to ask to take off work? Ask your boss now, so when you do put in for time off, they won't be surprised, and by putting the word out now, your coworkers might decide not to ask for time off when you need it.
4) Where do you want to look? Near home? In that place you always wanted to check out but haven't? Washington? California? Eugene? Slab City? 9th ward? People's opinions vary on this, so go look where you would like it to be, but at the same time don't feel bad if you can't find something good there..... all of the pacific northwest is gorgeous in it's own ways....
That's all the preliminary stuff I could think of to do this far in advance.......if anyone else can think of anything, please add.....
