Talk is good, but what is better is: scouting! Everyone who has vehicle access should be out scouting regularly! It can't be anywhere until someone finds a specific place for it to be! If you find a nice site, post it here as well as to the other amf website. Talk to people, the vagarious sound systems and performers that want to be there and let them know you've found a place. Take pictures and send it to them.
Some things to look for in a good mutant spot:

*WAAAAY out there - far from stinkin' civilization
*HARD to find - dirt roads keep forces of control at bay, somewhat
*Good Drinking water nearby - them muties are thirsty
*shade - usually translates as "trees"
*poisonous insects ans snakes - alwaya a plus!
*Neighbors - NONE! They will complain.

Good Hunting!

While I do have a vehicle... it is a costly guzzling beast... If anyone else in PDX could provide transport (of gas), I would gladly drive or go along for the ride... Hopefully I can attend when it happens too! ha!

Ditto... weekends for me too! I would say considering travel time a weekend is the time frame... many weekends. Drive out either Fri night or Sat. am and camp til Sunday and come back early afternoon. Need time to do all that stuff you're too tired to do during the week! What a cycle... I dunno... I won't be available for a couple weeks at least. I'm sure we could find others to go along for the ride as well if there's room... I have a kid and a dog, and they'll have to go too... dododo

I'm available to help scout locations; but I don't have much of anything to offer unfortunately. No car, no knowledge of the local wilderness, not even a canteen. So if you can find anybody more qualified to go, get them; or if not, and you want a little company, get me. Get me?

You have your suave genteel... Well, I've never actually done it either... but I've been to enough to know that the bumpier the road, the worse the directions, through Hell and Fury is where we need to go. And I have a nose for such things...

My reply doesn't seem to have gotten posted, so again... Isn't there something about little kids in small truck cabs? How small kid?

Prospective wkends? I think I may have just commited the 14th to Alberta art walk. Which put the 21st open.

some other things to consider when scouting are---
    1) enough space for 8-10 large camps to set up in, which are nearby each other, but with minimal sound bleed
2)camping for those who dont want to camp in those main areas--flat ground, keep in mind texture of ground, and what it would be like to sleep there for 2 weeks
3)the road in being wide enough to have cars park on the side of it without touching the "brush", yet still allowing a large vehicle to get by (the rangers in the past have insisted on this kind of thing, although they don't enforce it every year)

if i think of any more things we normally look for, I'll update....

Peoples' lives depend on the space and its ability to allow an ambulance or firetruck in there. Sorry, too far from civilization isn't cool. Looks good on paper, but not cool in reality. I'm happier seeing a firetruck than seeing the flesh burnt from some of your bodies that weren't fast enough to make it to the water, or panicked, or there simply wasn't any water to get to. Choosing a spot is NOT a joke, it's a serious responsibility, so don't take it lightly.

That said, we're running out of time. Unless somebody already has a GREAT spot that is lush, safe, big enough, hidden enough, but not TOO remote, has water and is inviting to inhabit then I'm heading for Southern Oregon and I'll find one that will do the job. If you're not absolutely totally 110% sure and you've found a good spot before (and I can count the good spots we've had on one hand) then it's probably not the spot. For future reference, you don't choose the spot; the spot invites you, but you have to be looking and listening with the right parts of you, lest you be misled.

        Peace out.

Just anther decent option to add to the sites

Not TOO remote? Tell someone that and they'll have it 20 miles out of Portland... You seem eager to take the "reigns" and find a spot thats easier for YOU. Most people i have talked to have been planning for southern WA, for many many months now.

Of course, if multiple AMFs popped up at the same time, 'twouldn't be bad, really. It would certainly show an abundance of autonomy. After all, if the fest is getting so big, maybve it is time it split up, a cell division, so to speak.

That's sounds interesting, but is the fest really getting that big. I think no matter where the fest is some people will have to travel long distances. Has anyone thought of talking with the Natives & having it on a concentration camp, er I mean reservation. I'm sure if the right person spoke with the right tribe it could be done, obviously not this year but next. But I suppose I'm getting ahead of things with that. Washington has many open spaces for such an event & also is full of rivers, springs, etc. South of Wenatchee has many such places.
