I would like to begin this discussion by stating that I dont claim to have all the answers & nor am I intricately aware of all the details. This is simply the start of a discussion I feel needs to be had. I would also like to add that there is nothing wrong with being succesful & having $ so long as you earned it, & this does not make you a yuppie.
I'm deeply concerned with my community, or what's left of it. It is broken down & ridden with many ills. I'm not specifically speaking of A.M.F., but of the world of freaks in general. There are many people who enjoy looking like a freak & partaking of the scene for all the wrong reasons. There are people who lie, cheat, & steal to get ahead. They are no better then the yuppies who do the same to climb the corporate ladder.
I've met people who enjoy looking like a freak simply to get attention &/or fit in somewhere. I'd like to state here that I have many good friends who look "normal". Being a freak should be about being yourself without regard to what others think, including other freaks. If you feel the need to be the constant center of attention than you should deal with your insecurity issues.
I've met people who lie, cheat, steal, & manipulate to get ahead in some way. I've met people who have stolen other peoples ideas, lied to make themselves look better or more important, & generally be bad people. This behaviour is disrupting the community at large & causing divisiveness. It's pitting freaks upon freaks, & we have enough problems with those outside the community. I find this very disconcerting.
Last but not least is the egocentricity I have witnessed. There are many people who feel they are somehow better than others because of various reasons. Whether it's the band, troupe, tribe, clique, or whatever they may be a part of. These people need to get over themselves & realize without other freaks they have nothing. We must all support each other in whatever way we can. When shit goes down it will be other freaks & family to be there for you. The yuppies who spend $ at our festivals, shows, & performances dont care about us. We're simply entertainment to be gawked at for an evening. We are outside of society & unless we stick together that society will crush us one by one. Remember where you came from & who you are.

I would also like to add that I've met people who claim to be a part of "the scene" who put down others for being "too much of a freak", i.e. homosexuals & transgendered folks.

If you are a human you deserve to be put to the sword, a freak on the other hand is much more palatable to us Goblins.

    totally well said.
there are freaks among us who have stopped dressing up, and look "norm", but don't doubt for a moment that they aren't freaks inside!!! it's like reverse freak-discrimination. if i don't have dreadys, or wear the certain clothes, or whatever the little trend is, this means that i'm not fun to hang out with?! how lame is that. i have felt this discrimination, and i know the pain of it. i gave up my hair-do's and fancy clothes when i became a student of mortuary science. i will have my degree in a year, and then will have to serve an internship, before getting fully lisenced. don't be fooled, i am a hard core freak. i have fires inside of me that would burn your average passion out pretty quick and most can't keep up with me, though i may not look like it. all that i can discern about a person's looks is how much money and time they spend to look like that, i can't know what else they do with their time. i prefer to judge a person on what they actually do, and who they are, before i worry about how it will look to be seen in the presence of normality. also, i have seen people with really radical looks who yes, do use that as their automatic "in". those tatoos all over some dude's face don't automaticly mean that he's okay, cool, or even reliable, i mean comon! isnt being a freak about being yourself, and regardless of how you look being considered a viable part of community? or is it only for the fashionable?

absolutely true.. can i add.. just because some of us also don't "dress the part" or follow the fashion side of it.. doesn't mean we are less attached to the community. or not cool enough. or whatever the bullshit i've been getting from fellow peeps is....

    if that makes sence...

It makes sense to me. Yes, I look the part but dont judge others for being themselves, whatever that may be. We're all mutants in our own way & the war on our oppressive society must be fought on all levels. I find many mutants who can afford all the tattoos, clothes, etc. are simply in it for fashion & do nothing for the community. All they wanna do is take & use the community to their own gain. Blood in, blood out yo, I'm in it to win it & down for life. Keep your head up & your foot down.

Be yourself. Why trip on the wannabes? Fuck'em. If you're real you can spot those that are not a mile away. Now I have no idea what you are talking about when you say "spending money at our festivals", cuz the AMF is free, right down to the food if you are real and can contribute in some way. We made it that way from the start. We all try to raise funds by putting on performances and selling our wares beforehand, but once you're there, there's nothing to spend your cash on except from private sources for those that choose to. No entry fees, nothing. You don't even have to pay for water. It's nice if you can chip in for gas for generators, but other than that what's all this hubbub about money at parties?

Now as for "buying freakdom"...whatever. You can't buy it. You are or you are not. If you can afford pretty clothes and nice toys...good for you. If you want to buy things (body modifications, etc.) because you feel they help you express something, it's your thing, do whatcha wanna do. Some might see it as a crutch cuz they don't need that to be freaky, others feel that it IS part of how they express their freakdom. Neither are wrong. However, tattooing your entire face is probably NOT the thing to do if you want to travel unnoticed, I don't care how good your invisibility spell is. Same for stretching your earlobes down to your neck. Again, it's YOUR thing.

My personal preference is to keep it low key until it's time. The Yakuza keep their beautiful tattoos under their shirts and their pearls in their pants. When it's time, all freakdom breaks loose. When it's time to move quietly and fairly invisibly, they do that too. I find wisdom in that and apply it to my own freakdom, but it's only mine and not yours, at all.

Remember this: there are A LOT of people out there that do not accept freakdom nor try to understand it. They just see a difference between what they know and are comfortable with, and the unknown that scares them (SATAN!!! SSSSAAAAATTAAANNN!! SSSSSSSSSAAAAAATTTTTTAAAAANNNN!!!!). There are those out there that do not understand or feel it, but see it as another resource or scene to exploit. Fuck all those people. They get it or they don't. Just recognize them for who and what they are, and then give them the cold shoulder. When it's time for the freaks to gather, they'll not be invited or made welcome. And by the way, when the time comes, do NOT hesitate to bare your fangs, if you have them.

        O

I wasnt speaking specifically of A.M.F. but the world of mutants at large. & yes I can & do have problems with people sometimes because of my choice to tattoo my face. But not so long ago it was considered taboo for men to have long hair or black people to have afros' & now it's not a big deal because people were brave enough to test society & push beyond it's confines. As more people tattoo their faces society must & will find a place for them in the mainstream. Everyone has their own way & this "war" must be fought on all levels to be won. As each generation passes the confines of our collective minds will expand.
