Legalize Hemp and Cannabis in California

Hi Family,

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California for November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized at this point) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because this law will protect cannabis users from discrimination in healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for hemp and cannabis which will restore full human rights to cannabis users and growers all across California.

I have two parts to my plan. The first part is to publicly post and distribute our "Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

The second part of the plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signature they will collect in the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for cannabis smokers in order to get support from legitimate people. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to people who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we are collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for cannabis legalization in California, so this is an initiative which is not doomed. It's time has finally arrived. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

Real life Greek Robinhood

What do you get when you cross Jesse James, Robin Hood, and Jack Bauer in the body of a giant, bearded, bald Greek man?
Meet Vassilis Paleokostas:

This crazy, utterly fearless dude is public enemy number one in Greece, and probably one of the most badass motherfuckers to come from the country since the days of our friend Leonidas.

Vassilis' story starts back in the early 90s, when he went on an insane crime spree of delicious armed robbery, blackmail, extortion, and kidnapping. Basically, his modus operandi was to kidnap a super-rich bastard, hold him for a ridiculous ransom, and then sell him back to his stupid family in exchange for giant piles of cold, hard cash. Then, he'd take that bling, keep a small percentage of it for himself, and distribute the rest of his newly-acquired wealth to impoverished farmers of the tiny rural province in which he grew up. The dude quickly made a name for himself as the Robin Hood of Greece, and was beloved by fans of badassery, the people of the lower classes, and pretty much anybody else he wasn't in the process of robbing or extorting for money. Shit, even the fucking people he kidnapped came out later and said that he was very polite and respectful to them while they were in captivity, and that it was pretty much the most pleasant kidnapping they'd ever experienced. That should give you some indication of what this dude was all about – steal from the rich, give to the poor, make a profit in the process, and be completely awesome all of the goddamned time. He also made a vow never to harm a member of the public in his criminal escapades. He's been true to his word.

In true badass fashion, Vassilis Paleokostas also has a trusty sidekick – a lunatic Albanian named Alket Rizai. Rizai is like the Friar Tuck in this story, only if instead of being a benevolent, staff-swinging priest, the clergyman was a crazy gunman with a hair-trigger and a penchant for firing automatic weapons at heavily-armed tactical police officers. Rizai is currently up on charges for murder, though I haven't really been able to track down any details about any of that (that's the problem with trying to research current events, I suppose). My assumption is that he was being attacked by some evil corrupt officers sent by the Sherriff of Nottingham and responded by burning a full clip of Uzi ammunition into them, jumping through a plate glass window, rescuing a damsel in distress, and swinging off on a chandelier with a hot babe clinging to his rippling biceps. Also, according to a Greek friend of mine, this guy once blew up a known Mafia hangout by shooting it with a fucking rocket launcher.

Of course, the downside to being a career criminal – even a happy-go-lucky one who commits non-violent crimes in the name of the oppressed populace – is that eventually the long arm of the law is going to bitch-slap you in the fucking face really really hard. In 1995, Vassilis Paleokostas was caught by the fuzz, convicted of kidnapping, robbery, and weapons charges, and hauled off to a federal pound-me-in-the-ass penitentiary known as Korydallos Prison.

Now over the years, Korydallos Prison has gained a reputation as being one of the harshest and most brutal prisons in Greece. This place is like a mix between Andersonville, Oz, and that stupid plastic box they keep Magneto inside in the X-Men movies. The warden is a hardass son-of-a-bitch, the guards don't give a shit, and people that go inside the facility never come out.

Except Vassilis Paleokostas.

In June 2006, Paleokostas' older brother (another pathological criminal who is now serving jail time on 16 counts of armed robbery) commandeered a helicopter, and landed it right in the middle of the fucking exercise yard of the prison in broad daylight. The armed guards at Korydallos, not expecting to be subjected to such and unbelievable display of gigantic steel-plated testicles, assumed that this chopper belonged to the warden or the Chief of Prisons or something, and instead of investigating it they all decided to make sure their shoes were appropriately spit-shined so as not to incur a citation from their wrathful bosses. Vassilis, who had orchestrated the entire operation from the beginning, and his Albanian buddy simply walked up to the helicopter, hopped inside, and lifted off. By the time the guards got their heads out of their asses and started firing their guns at the bird, it was already too late. Paleokostas had escaped.

So the Greek police put out an all-points bulletin, and a nation-wide manhunt began for the Greek Robin Hood. Officers, dogs, and federal agents scoured the countryside for this fugitive day and night, relentlessly following leads and doing everything in their power to bring this wanted criminal to justice.

Paleokostas evaded them for two and a half years. He lived in the mountains outside Athens, evaded all attempts to recapture him, and even orchestrated another high-profile kidnapping in the process – snatching a powerful jackass CEO industrialist, ransoming him for a huge wad of cash, and once again distributing the loot to local farmers and families. There are also rumors that he planned and executed another kidnapping while he was still incarcerated, which is bonus points no matter how you look at it.

In August 2008, Paleokostas was tracked down and re-captured by the Greek police. He was placed in a different maximum security facility, where he was held for another six months, awaiting trial for his brazen escape in 2006. On 21 February 2009, Vassilis Paleokostas was transferred back to his old home – Korydallos Prison. His trial was to begin on the 23rd, and he was to stay in his former holding area while he stood trial for this crime.

But he never made it to trial. The very next day, 22 February, ANOTHER FUCKING HELICOPTER showed up in the skies above Korydallos Prison. It flew over a large tower of the prison, lowered a long rope ladder, and Vassilis Paleokostas and Alket Rizai climbed up into the chopper. As the helicopter flew off into the sunset, the prisoners of Korydallos cheered.

Greek police opened fire on the chopper as it flew off, but a woman returned fire with an AK-47 assault rifle. Now having hot Greek babes with automatic weapons come save your ass from prison isn't the sort of thing that happens to normal people every day, but that's just how things work out for you when you're a badass like Vassilis Paleokostas.

The police eventually tracked down the helicopter, and found that it had ditched on the side of the road outside Athens with a bullet hole in the gas tank. According to the pilot, Paleokostas and his associates left the chopper and drove off on totally sweet motorcycles to an undisclosed location. They also popped some totally bitchin' wheelies while doing so.

Vassilis not only earned his freedom for the second time, and once again showed the world that his ballsack is roughly the size of a small continent, but he also got some sweet delicious revenge on the motherfuckers in charge of the Greek prison system at the same time. For allowing the same guy to escape the same prison in the same manner twice in a row, the Greek government fired the country's Chief of Prisons, the Inspector-General of Prisons, the warden of Korydallos, and three guards at the facility. They all learned what it means to step to somebody as awesome as the Greek Robin Hood.

Vassilis Paleokostas is fully rad because kicked ass, won the respect of the people, said "fuck you" to the police, and managed to single-handedly place the country's three top-ranking prison officials in the back of the unemployment line.

He is still at large.

July 23, 2008 was an historic day! I awoke to hear on the Internet an astounding interview on Kerrang Radio (UK) with Astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who announced matter of factly, "yes, we have been visited." Did this sudden announcement signal the beginning of Official UFO Disclosure? I transcribed much of the conversation wherein Edgar Mitchell finally briefed us all. www.disclose.tv/action/viewvideo/6168/

The radio announcer asked Dr. Mitchell, "Are we alone in the Universe?" to which he responded, "Oh, I know for sure we're not alone in the Universe." The radio announcer expressed his shock at this disclosure and wondered if Mitchell was "pulling his leg" with "astronaut humor." Mitchell assured him the Roswell crash was real, and a number of contacts are real and ongoing. "Why is it being covered up?" he asked. The U.S. chose to do this after World War II, explained Mitchell, but it's starting to open up now in the international press. Mitchell also discussed the Catholic Church's recent press releases that we are not alone in the Universe. He explained that the amount of covert attempts to cover-up and the amount of disinformation is decreasing. Mitchell stated, "there's more nonsense out there about this than is real, but it IS a real phenomenon. … Some of us are privileged enough to have been briefed on some of it." He stated, "We're not alone in the Universe. We have been visited."

Dr. Mitchell went on to briefly discuss Roswell in 1947, saying he grew up in Roswell and it was a real extraterrestrial crash there. He admitted involvement in intelligence and military circles, and UFO committees and groups, and admitted it has been "well covered up in the past sixty years." He claimed there has been "quite a bit of contact" and that "contact is real and ongoing," but that he does not know where the visitors are from. He admitted to "back-engineering" of spacecraft, but claimed the "homegrown" vehicles "are not as sophisticated as what the visitors have." When asked if there will be an actual disclosure this year, Mitchell said there are serious organizations moving toward disclosure, and that it has already begun, since the Belgian, French, Brazilian and Mexican governments have opened their files and some British files were recently released. He indicated, "I think we're heading toward serious disclosure, but I can't say how fast." He said "public acceptance is increasing and disinformation seems to be decreasing." When asked "what will the reaction be?" he said it's "ho-hum so what's new?" and that "well over 70% of people accept it as fact."

"Do others involved in the moon landings know about this?" Mitchell responded, "Some of them do." When asked if the visitor's intent is hostile or peaceful, Mitchell stated, "It's pretty obvious that if it were hostile we'd have been gone by now. Or could have been. We had no defense if that's what their real intent was." When asked what they look like, he claimed there to be many groups, but described only one of them, "You've seen some of the pictures … little people that look strange to us. … pretty accurate." Finally, when asked if he was worried for his own safety, Mitchell replied, "Oh no. They're not knocking anybody off for that anymore."

Good News For Modern Man?

Mitchell indicated that over 70 percent of people accept extraterrestrial visitation as fact. I find that number to be unbelievably large. He perhaps is referring to globally, not in the U.S. If true, I believe Mitchell underplays the reaction of the remaining 30 percent, who are in profound denial in an isolated, outback cosmos—namely the scientific "Darwinists." He underplays the effect on science—a "naturalist" paradigm unbelievably rigid in its fundamentalist and insular premise that "intelligent" life is Earth-based only.

Is Official UFO Disclosure good news for modern man? Well, it is and, then again, it isn't. The effect on Darwinian evolution will be profound. This is what the cover-up is and has been all about. After all science is not about flexibility but is about security; and the alarm for this potential breach in security was pushed by NASA in 1960, when it tasked the Brookings Institute to think through the implications of the possible discovery of artifacts on the moon or other planets on which we may land or send probes.

The Brookings Study was concerned about the impact of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) on religion, but it also feared the impact on science. In part, the Brookings Study noted that "scientists and engineers might be the most devastated by the discovery of relatively superior creatures, since these professions are most clearly associated with mastery of nature." The study also noted, "Advanced understanding of nature might vitiate all our theories."

Darwinian evolution epitomizes mankind's mastery over nature. Indeed, as I have noted in my book, Space Travelers and the Genesis of the Human Form, the evolution story dramatizes the "natural" transfiguration of mankind through a linear procession of metamorphoses that eventually separate him from the animals of his ancestry. Evolution is Western man's totem; essentially, it represents mastery over our own nature. Since the entire realm of modern biology and chemistry is based on the Darwinian paradigm, the discovery, or should I say, the official disclosure, of extraterrestrial intelligence would completely shatter the Darwinian mythology of humanity's accidental climb out of the muck of our local habitat Earth.

From the perspective of Darwinian theory, mankind may be seen as the winner of a preposterous survival lottery which, we are told, given the incredible odds should not have occurred even once. Thus, if the humanoid form evolved from the great ape lineage on planet Earth, the mathematical odds are incredibly against the possibility of that same chain of random and incremental steps, contingent upon an interplay with a similar biological environment, occurring elsewhere in the Universe. Therefore, the assumptions of Darwinian evolution presuppose the humanoid form to be an entirely Earth-based phenomenon.

Darwinian evolution is a metaphysical genesis tale of life on Earth. In her book Evolution as a Religion, philosopher Mary Midgley argued that "evolution is not just an inert piece of theoretical science," but is also "a powerful folk tale about human origins." It must be pointed out that creationism and evolutionism have one main factor in agreement: they are both Earth-centric genesis tales. Both oppose the idea of intelligence at large in the Universe, including the idea of space travelers. In both theories, the Earth is the center of the Universe and WE are IT!

It must also be understood that the theory of evolution essentially views the human or humanoid form as merely an accident in a chain of accidents. For instance, Stephen Jay Gould argued that the evolution of the human form is not a "repeatable occurrence." In the Journal of British Interplanetary Society (1992), E.J. Coffey also argued that "the survivors resemble the winners of a lottery rather than creatures better designed than the unlucky majority who do not survive."

For quite the same reasons as above, British astronomer, Sir Fred Hoyle, proponent of the Modern Theory of Panspermia, mathematically dismissed the chance of Darwinian evolution being an actual occurrence, arguing that "even if the whole Universe consisted of organic soup ... the chance of producing merely the basic enzymes of life by random processes without intelligent direction would be about 1 over a 1 with 40,000 zeros after it; a probability too small to imagine." Hoyle concluded that "Darwinian evolution is most unlikely to get even one polypeptide sequence right, let alone the thousands on which living cells depend for survival."

Given that there are trillions of different kinds of cells in the body, all in delicate balance with each other, each of these varied cellular structures would also have to develop by chance. In a Times-Advocate interview in December 1982, Hoyle declared that this mathematical impossibility is well known to scientists, yet nobody seems willing to "blow the whistle" on the absurdity of Darwinian theory. Hoyle claims "most scientists still cling to Darwinism because of its grip on the educational system," and because they don't want to be branded as "heretics." Let's hope this allegation is at least partially true.

Others have "done the math" as well. British molecular biologist Francis Crick, who received the 1962 Nobel Prize for the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, wondered if we weren't from around here. After discovering the astonishingly huge and complex information storage capacity of the DNA molecule (humans have three billion coding letters in each nucleus), Crick could not imagine any conditions under which this information vehicle could have evolved from non-living chemicals. He argued that since the earth has too short a history for life to have developed here, it must have developed on another planet in a solar system several billion years older than ours.

Crick's aversion to religion led him and Leslie Orgel, in 1973, to put forth the theory of Directed Panspermia. To get around the idea of God, Crick proposed that the primordial seeds of life were shipped to earth in spaceships billions of years ago by intelligent beings. After proposing this idea, Crick was left in the predicament of explaining the origin of the ET beings, and finally had to acknowledge the paucity of the idea, saying, "Every time I write a paper on the origin of life, I swear I will never write another one, because there is too much speculation running after too few facts." (Life Itself, 1981)

Although an atheist, Crick was quoted as saying, "An honest man, armed with the knowledge available to us now, could only state that in some sense the origin of life appears to be almost a miracle." William Hamilton in his essay "Astrogenesis" suggests, "The real paradigm shift is to consider that the Universe is a life-producing nursery and that the genesis and evolution of life is not earth-centered but rather is distributed among the stars of the galaxies."

In his book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Thomas Kuhn defines a scientific revolution as a "non-cumulative developmental episode" whereby an older paradigm is replaced in whole or in part by an "incompatible new one." Such scientific revolutions begin with a growing sense that "an existing paradigm has ceased to function adequately in the exploration of an aspect of nature." The emergence of new theories is usually preceded by a period of "pronounced professional insecurity," since it involves large-scale paradigm destruction. Kuhn explains, under normal rules a scientific theory "is declared invalid only if an alternative candidate is available to take its place."

Unfortunately for them, academia and its inflexible materialist skeptics have persistently disallowed any alternative candidates from the Vitalist arena to impose on their Nature party: such as Lovelock and Margulis's Gaia Theory (in this case they made it conform to Naturalism before allowing a baby toe in); Rupert Sheldrake's Theory of Formative Causation (they absolutely spit on the idea of morphogenetic fields); Extraterrestrial theories such as Panspermia, Visitor Genetic Breeding or Planetary Seeding experiments ("little green men" anybody?); the mathematical theories of Intelligent Design ("Creationism in a cheap tuxedo"); and we all know where they stand on the "Super-natural" theory of Creationism (oh well, I say, if it walks like a duck).

Many people I talk to are under the assumption that Darwinism is playfully malleable and open to their mishmash of supernatural ideas. I try to inform them that Darwinian evolution is an all-or-nothing theory; it will not allow inclusion of any Vitalist or Supra-natural process—or, goddess forbid, any anthropomorphism. It is very exacting on that rule. If you are espousing any form of Supernaturalism, you are clearly not a Darwinian. Perhaps you are a Vitalist.

The essential problem is, according to Kuhn, scientists cannot do research in the absence of a controlling and overarching (i.e., tightly closed and uncompromising) paradigm: in this case Naturalism (Materialism) as opposed to Supernaturalism (Vitalism). Under normal circumstances they do not and can not pull the floor out from under themselves by either switching paradigms or allowing an alternative toe in the door. An irremediable structural flaw lies at the base of our civilization. I call it Separation, and it has generated all the converging crises -- economic, health, ecological, and political -- of our day. It manifests as separation from each other in the dissolution of community, separation from nature in the destruction of the environment, separation within our selves in the deterioration of health. Science is its deep ideology, technology is its accomplice, and money is its agent.

Money as we know it today is intimately related to our identity as discrete and separate selves, as well as to the destruction that our separation has wrought. A saying goes, "Money is the root of all evil." But why should it be? After all, the purpose of money is, at its most basic, simply to facilitate exchange; in other words, to connect human gifts with human needs. What power, what monstrous perversion, has turned money into the opposite: an agent of scarcity?

For indeed, we live in a world of fundamental abundance, a world where vast quantities of food, energy, and materials go to waste. Half the world starves while the other half wastes enough to feed the first half. In the Third World and our own ghettos, people lack food, shelter, and other basic necessities, but cannot afford to buy them. Other people would love to supply these necessities and do other meaningful work, but cannot because there is no money in it.

Money utterly fails to connect gifts and needs. We pour vast resources into wars, plastic junk, and innumerable other products that do not serve human needs or human happiness. Why? It is not difficult to trace it back to greed, to the love of money. Ultimately though, greed is a red herring, itself a symptom and not a cause of a deeper problem. To blame greed and to fight it by intensifying the program of self-control is to intensify the war against the self, which is just another expression of the war against nature and the war against the other that lies at the base of our civilization.

Amidst superabundance, even we in rich countries live in an omnipresent anxiety, craving "financial security" as we try to keep scarcity at bay. We make choices (even those having nothing to do with money) according to what we can "afford," and we commonly associate freedom with wealth. But when we pursue it, we find that the paradise of financial freedom is a mirage, receding as we approach it, and that the chase itself enslaves. The anxiety is always there, the scarcity always just one disaster away. Greed is simply a response to the perception of scarcity. Money, which has turned abundance into scarcity, precedes greed. But not money per se, only the kind of money we use today, the kind of money that is evaporating as we speak, money with a very special characteristic that ensures its eventual demise.

This characteristic appears, in different forms, in the other substructures of our civilization as well. By understanding it, we can clarify the "irremediable structural flaw" of our civilization itself; more importantly, we can design new systems of money to supplant the old and that bear the opposite characteristic. The results will be the opposite as well: abundance, not scarcity; generosity, not greed; and sustainability, not ruin.

The defining characteristic of money today is usury, better known as interest. It is usury that both generates today's endemic anxiety and drives the world-devouring engine of perpetual growth. To explain how, I will quote Bernard Leitaer's now-famous parable The Eleventh Round, from his book The Future of Money.

Once upon a time, in a small village in the Outback, people used barter for all their transactions. On every market day, people walked around with chickens, eggs, hams, and breads, and engaged in prolonged negotiations among themselves to exchange what they needed. At key periods of the year, like harvests or whenever someone's barn needed big repairs after a storm, people recalled the tradition of helping each other out that they had brought from the old country. They knew that if they had a problem someday, others would aid them in return.

One market day, a stranger with shiny black shoes and an elegant white hat came by and observed the whole process with a sardonic smile. When he saw one farmer running around to corral the six chickens he wanted to exchange for a big ham, he could not refrain from laughing. "Poor people," he said, "so primitive." The farmer's wife overheard him and challenged the stranger, "Do you think you can do a better job handling chickens?" "Chickens, no," responded the stranger, "But there is a much better way to eliminate all that hassle." "Oh yes, how so?" asked the woman. "See that tree there?" the stranger replied. " Well, I will go wait there for one of you to bring me one large cowhide. Then have every family visit me. I'll explain the better way."

And so it happened. He took the cowhide, and cut perfect leather rounds in it, and put an elaborate and graceful little stamp on each round. Then he gave to each family 10 rounds, and explained that each represented the value of one chicken. "Now you can trade and bargain with the rounds instead of the unwieldy chickens," he explained.

It made sense. Everybody was impressed with the man with the shiny shoes and inspiring hat.

"Oh, by the way," he added after every family had received their 10 rounds, "in a year's time, I will come back and sit under that same tree. I want you to each bring me back 11 rounds. That 11th round is a token of appreciation for the technological improvement I just made possible in your lives." "But where will the 11th round come from?" asked the farmer with the six chickens. "You'll see," said the man with a reassuring smile.

Assuming that the population and its annual production remain exactly the same during that next year, what do you think had to happen? Remember, that 11th round was never created. Therefore, bottom line, one of each 11 families will have to lose all its rounds, even if everybody managed their affairs well, in order to provide the 11th round to 10 others.

So when a storm threatened the crop of one of the families, people became less generous with their time to help bring it in before disaster struck. While it was much more convenient to exchange the rounds instead of the chickens on market days, the new game also had the unintended side effect of actively discouraging the spontaneous cooperation that was traditional in the village. Instead, the new money game was generating a systemic undertow of competition among all the participants.

There are really only three ways this story can end: inflation, bankruptcy, or growth. The same choices face any economy based on usury. The villagers could procure another cowhide and make more currency; or one of each 11 families could go bankrupt, as Lietaer observes; or they could increase the number of chickens so that new "rounds" would have the same value as before. In a real economy, all three pressures operate simultaneously. The bankruptcy pressure drives a built-in insecurity, which in turn drives people and institutions to "make" more money through inflationary or productive means. Of these two choices, inflation is only a temporary solution (as we are discovering today). It can only push the grow-or-die imperative slightly into the future.

In other words, because of the money system, competition, insecurity, and greed are an inseparable part of our economy. They can never be eliminated as long as the necessities of life are denominated in usury-money. But this is only one reason why money destroys community. The other is related to the third pressure: perpetual growth.

As Lietaer's parable explains, because of interest, at any given time the amount of money owed is greater than the amount of money already existing. To make non-inflationary new money to keep the whole system going, we have to breed more chickens -- in other words, we have to create more "goods and services." The principal way of doing so is to begin selling something that was once free. It is to convert forests into timber, music into product, ideas into intellectual property, social reciprocity into paid services.

Would you like to get rich? Here is a business idea that, in one form or another, has worked spectacularly for thousands of years. Very simply, find anything that people do for themselves or each other for free. Then take it away from them: make it illegal, inconvenient, or otherwise unavailable. Then sell back to them what you have taken. Granted, usually no one does this consciously, but that has been the net effect of culture and technology over the last several thousand years.

Your 13th-century peasant ancestors rarely paid money for food, shelter, clothing, or entertainment (much less in a hunter-gatherer tribe). People were self-sufficient in all these things or, more likely, depended on elaborate gift networks, sharing, and reciprocity. Of these things is community built. Today, we pay strangers to meet most of our physical and cultural needs. You probably don't know the person who grew your food, wove your shirt, built your house, or sang the songs on your iPod. Abetted by technology, the commodification of formerly non-monetary goods and services has accelerated over the last few centuries, to the point today where very little is left outside the money realm. The vast commons, whether of land or of culture, has been cordoned off and sold -- all to keep pace with the exponential growth of money. This is the deep reason why we convert forests to timber, songs to intellectual property, and so on. It is why two-thirds of all American meals are now prepared outside the home. It is why herbal folk remedies have given way to pharmaceutical medicines, why child care has become a paid service, why drinking water is now the number one beverage sales growth category.

The imperative of perpetual growth implicit in interest is what drives the relentless conversion of life, world, and spirit into money. Completing the vicious circle, the more of life we convert into money, the more we need money to live. Usury, not money, is the proverbial root of all evil. Inducing competition and replacing personal relationships with paid services, it rends the fabric of community.

Community is closely linked to gift-giving; when anthropologists seek to understand a culture, they trace the flow of gifts. Unlike money transactions, in which no obligations linger after the transaction is completed, the giving of a gift creates a tie (which is the literal meaning of "obligation"). When gifts circulate, the community bonds. Lending money at interest is utterly contrary to the spirit of the gift. For one thing, a cardinal feature of an authentic gift is that we give it unconditionally. We may expect to be gifted in return, whether by the recipient or another member of the community, but we do not impose conditions on a true gift, or it is not really a gift.

More importantly, a universal characteristic of a gift is that it naturally increases as it circulates within a community, and that this increase must not be kept for oneself, but allowed to circulate with the gift. Interest amounts to keeping the increase on the gift for oneself, thereby withholding it from circulation in the community, weakening community for the benefit of the individual. It is no accident that many societies prohibited usury among themselves but allowed it in transactions with outsiders, who could not be trusted to recirculate a true gift back into the community. Hence the prohibition in Deuteronomy 23:20: "Unto a stranger you may lend upon usury, but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury."

The ramifications of this injunction when combined with Jesus' teaching that all men are brothers are obvious: interest is forbidden entirely. This was the position of the Catholic Church throughout the Middle Ages, and is still the rule in Islam today. However, starting with the merger of Church and state and accelerating with the rise of mercantilism in the late Middle Ages, pressure mounted to resolve the fundamental tension between Christian teaching and the requirements of commerce. The solution provided by Martin Luther and John Calvin was to separate moral and civil law, maintaining that the ways of Christ are not the ways of the world. Thus spirit became further separated from matter, and religion retreated another step toward worldly irrelevancy.

Abandoning the prohibition on interest was a key step in religion's complicity in the desacralizing of the world. After all, it is interest that drives the conversion of all that is sacred about the world -- its beauty, uniqueness, and living relationships -- into something profane. Why do we intuitively know money is profane? Because it is the one great exception to the irreducible uniqueness of all beings.

In my last Reality Sandwich essay, I described how each drop of water, even each electron, is unique and sacred. But not so each dollar. Money is by design standard, generic. Your dollar is the same as my dollar. Money today lacks even a unique serial number: It is bits in a computer, an abstraction of an abstraction of an abstraction. A forest is unique and sacred; not so the money from its clearcutting. Convert two distinct forests into money and they become the same. Applied to cultures, the same principle is fast creating a global monoculture where every service is a paid service.

When money mediates all our relationships, we too lose our uniqueness to become a standardized consumer of standardized goods and services, and a standardized functionary performing other services. No personal economic relationships are important, because we can always pay someone else to do it. No wonder, strive as we might, we find it so hard to create community. No wonder we feel so insecure, so replaceable. It is all because of the conversion, driven by usury, of the unique and sacred into the monetized and generic.

Because money is identified with Benthamite "utility" -- that is, the good -- this entire process is considered rational in traditional (neoclassical) economic theory. Quite simply, whenever anything is monetized, the world's "goodness" level rises. The same assumption appears in the euphemism "goods" to describe the products of industry. The very definition of a "good" is anything exchanged for money. In other words, Money = Good. Got that?

By definition, when we buy bottled water instead of tap water too polluted to drink, that is good. When we pay for day care instead of caring for our babies at home, that is good. When we buy a video game instead of playing outdoors, that is good.

In terms of conventional economics, it may actually be in an individual's rational self-interest to engage in activities that render the earth uninhabitable. This is potentially true even on the collective level: given the exponential nature of future cash flow discounting, it may be more in our "rational self-interest" to liquidate all natural capital right now -- cash in the earth -- than to preserve it for future generations. After all, the net present value of an eternal annual cash flow of one trillion dollars is only some twenty trillion dollars (at a 5% discount rate). Economically speaking, it would be more rational to destroy the planet in ten years while generating income of $100 trillion, than to settle for a sustainable level of $3 trillion a year forever.

If this seems like an outlandish fantasy, consider that it is exactly what we are doing today! According to the parameters we have established, we are making the insane but rational choice to incinerate our natural, social, cultural, and spiritual capital for financial profit. Amazingly, this end was foreseen thousands of years ago by the originator of the story of King Midas, whose touch turned everything to gold. Delighted at first with his gift, soon he had turned all his food, flowers, even his loved ones into cold, hard metal. Just like King Midas, we too are converting natural beauty, human relationships, and the basis of our very survival into money.

Yet despite this ancient warning, we continue to behave as if we could eat our money: David Korten once spoke of an East Asian minister who said his country's forests would be more valuable clearcut, with the money put in the bank to earn interest. Apparently, the effects of destroying the planet are of little concern to economists. William Nordhaus of Yale proclaims, "Agriculture, the part of the economy that is sensitive to climate change, accounts for just three percent of national output. That means there is no way to get a very large effect on the US economy." Oxford economist Wilfred Beckerman echoes him: "Even if net output of agriculture fell by 50 percent by the end of the next century, this is only a 1.5 per cent cut in GNP."

Must we, like King Midas, find ourselves marooned in a cold, comfortless, ugly, inhospitable world before we realize we cannot eat our money?

Because it builds exponentially, interest feeds a linearity that puts humankind outside of nature, which is bound by cycles. Subtly but inexorably, it drives the assumption that human beings exist apart from natural law. As well, interest drives a relentless anxiety by demanding always more, more, more, propelling the endless conversion of all wealth into financial capital. Part of this anxiety is encoded in the very word, "interest," which implies that self-interest too is bound up in ever-lasting increase.

Interest is a necessary counterpart to the mentality of externalization. Like interest, externalization involves a denial of nature's cyclicity by treating it as an infinite reservoir of resources and an infinite dumping ground for waste. Interest is also akin to fire, the foundation of modern technology. To keep it going requires the addition of ever more fuel, until the whole world is consumed, leaving but a pile of dollars or ash.

Money is a most peculiar kind of property, for unlike physical inventories of goods, "rust doth not corrode nor moths corrupt" it. Cash does not depreciate in value; on the contrary, in its modern, abstracted form of bits in a bank's computer, it grows in value as it earns interest. Thus it appears to violate a fundamental natural law: impermanence. Money does not require maintenance like a plot of farmland to maintain its productivity. It does not require constant rotation of stock like a store of grain to keep it fresh. No accident, then, was money's early and enduring association with gold, the metal most famously impervious to oxidation. Money perpetuates the fundamental illusion of independence from nature; financial wealth endures without constant interaction with the environment. Other forms of wealth are bothersome, because they require a continuing relationship with other people and the environment. But not money, which is now wholly abstract from physical commodities and thus abstract as well from natural laws of decay and change. Money as we know it is thus an integral component of the discrete and separate self.

It is a curious fact that most people are extremely unwilling to share their money. Even among relatives, sharing money is bound by strong taboos: I know countless poor families whose brothers, cousins, or uncles' families are very wealthy. And how many friendships have disintegrated, how many family members have shunned each other for years, over issues of money? Money, it seems, is inextricably wrapped up in the very essence of selfishness -- a clue to its deep association with self. Hence the intense sense of violation we feel upon getting "ripped off" (as if a part of our bodies were being removed) when from another perspective all that has happened is pieces of paper changing hands or bits turning on and off in a bank computer.

We do not usually share our money because we see it almost as part of our selves and the foundation of our biological security. Money is self. Meanwhile, conditioned by science and the origins of separation underlying it, we see other people as essentially just that, "other." Mixing these two realms invites confusion and conflict. The problem is, the more of life we convert to money, the more territory falls into one of these dichotomous realms, mine or yours, and the less common ground there is to share life and develop unguarded relationships. The conversion of life to money reduces everything to an economic transaction, leaving us the loneliest people ever to inhabit the planet. The propertization of the whole world means that everything is either mine, or someone else's. No longer is anything in common.

The violation we feel at being ripped off is much akin to the violation an indigenous hunter-gatherer must feel at witnessing the destruction of nature. When "I" is defined not as a discrete individual but through a web of relationships with people, earth, animals, and plants, then any harm to them violates ourselves as well. Even we moderns sometimes feel an echo of this violation when we see the bulldozers knocking down the trees to build a new shopping center. That is because our separation from the trees is illusory. The buried connectedness can be resisted through ideology, narcotized through distractions, or intimidated through the invocation of survival anxiety, but it can never die because it is germane to who we really are. The love of life that Edwin Wilson has named biophilia, and our natural empathy toward other human beings, is ultimately irrepressible because we are life and life is us.

The regime of separation has deadened us to the self-violation inherent in the despoliation of the planet and the degradation of its inhabitants. In an attempt to compensate for our lost sense of beingness, we transfer it to possessions and particularly to money, setting the stage for disaster. How? Because money (bearing interest) is an outright lie, encoding a false promise of imperishability and eternal growth. Identified with self, money and its associated "assets" suggest that if we stay in control of it, the self might be maintained forever, impervious to the rest of the cycle that follows growth: decay, death, and rebirth.

Obviously, there is a problem when something that does not decay but only grows, forever, exponentially, is linked to commodities which do not share this property. The only possible result is that these other commodities -- social, cultural, natural, and spiritual capital -- will eventually be exhausted in the frantic, hopeless attempt to redeem the ultimately fraudulent promise inherent in money with interest.

They are almost exhausted already. What more of community or of nature can we still commoditize, before the very basis of life and sanity crumbles? All of today's crises originate in the conversion of natural, social, cultural, and spiritual capital into money. Yet even usury is not the deepest root. It is not an accidental feature of our system that, if only someone had made a wiser choice, could be different. It is implicit in our Newtonian-Cartesian cosmology in which, by definition, more for me is less for you. As this cosmology rapidly becomes obsolete, we can glimpse an emerging new money system embodying a very different conception of self and world. Until we transition to it, there is no hope that the current conversion of social, cultural, natural, and spiritual capital into money will ever abate. Under an interest-based money system, it is inevitable that we will cash in the earth.

In Part 2 of this essay, I will describe what the currency of Reunion will look like. When it reflects the new human identity and relationship to nature that is emerging from the present convergence of crises, money will have the opposite effects it has today. It will be a force for sharing, not competition; for generosity, not greed; for community, not division; for conservation, not liquidation. Can you imagine a world where money is the ally of all our best impulses? That is the promise of the new money I will describe in Part 2.

Where the Ochoco Gathering in Oregon will Be.
The 2007 Rainbow Gathering is in Ochoco National Forest at a place called Indian Prarie in central Oregon. (between Prineville and Mitchell)
From Prineville:
Take hwy 26 east towards Mitchell. Make a right turn onto hwy 23,(this road is not marked, but is the next two lane paved road after the reservoir, a few miles out of town, to the right) which later turns into hwy 22 and continues to Walton Lake. Soon after the lake, turn left onto FS 150, a dirt road. Go a little ways till 150 ends in a T. Go right onto FS 2630, and continue to the parking lot and Bus Village.
From Mitchell:
Take hwy 26 west towards Prineville. A little ways past the Bandit Springs rest area, go left onto FS 2630. This later becomes FS 2210, and 2630 becomes a less maintained road. Follow FS 2210 to hwy 22. Turn left onto hwy 22 and follow past Walton Lake. Soon after the lake, turn left onto FS 150, a dirt road. Go a little ways till 150 ends in a T. Go right onto FS 2630, and continue to the parking lot and Bus Village.

This is right near the Bridge Creek Wilderness area, and north of the Big Summit Prarie. I can see several springs on the map. Sortof behind the site is the Mt. Pisgah Lookout. It looks to be no more than 6000-6500 feet in altitude.

What is a Rainbow Gathering?
Carla's Gathering Basics
What follows is my take on it. No one put me in charge (thank goodness), so you may get other answers from other folks that add or subtract stuff - but basically I think most folks will be in agreement with what I see as being the basics for a gathering.
It is free and non-commercial. This means no entry fee and no money charged for any service at the event (food, medical, etc.). There are people at gatherings who hang out with the barter circle and essentially have a commercial trip going either with trade or cash, but this is their own personal trip and has nothing to do with the actual set-up of a gathering. I personally consider these folks in violation of the basic spirit of the gathering and wish they would go away, or at least put away their trade goods. But since we have no cops, no courts, and no jails, they continue to do as they please, over the objections of many but also with the support also of many. Anyway, with the exception of these folks who are taking advantage of the free space, you shouldn't find any commercialism at a gathering whatsoever.
Rainbow gatherings are non-aligned both spiritually and politically. There is no one right religious or spiritual belief; people of all faiths are welcome to come gather. Often, people from specific churches or temples come set up their own camp and feed lots of folks from their kitchens (the Krishnas and the Bread of Life Christian camp being the most notable). There are no hassles towards any church group proselytizing or trying to win converts - if people want to listen, that's their own business.
Rainbow also does not support any specific political cause, party, issue, or candidate. Many people come to gatherings to recruit for their own specific Peace Walk, Drums around the Pentagon, environmental action, or whatever; but again, that is their own trip. They certainly have the right of free speech to spread the word about whatever event they are sponsoring. But they do nothave the right to call it a Rainbow event or claim they have support of the Rainbow Family. If they do make such claims, they are ripping off the Family name. Folks involved in such actions have every right to also mention, if asked, that yes, they consider themselves to be Rainbows. No reason not to fly your colors, especially when you're doing something you consider a good cause and are proud of being involved in. You just can't say that your event (protesting logging the rainforest, for example) is a Rainbow protest as such.
We have no leaders. We operate by consensus process. No one is in charge, we have no board of directors. For many regional events, a small circle of people often initiates the event, and the circle grows and becomes many. All the labor of getting the gathering together in a safe and healthy manner is done by volunteers.
The only rule we have is that of peaceful respect. That actually encompasses a lot, when you stop and think about it. Sure, no one can tell anyone else what to do, but if someone builds an unsafe fire under a tree, they will hear about it (hopefully in a sweet way) from many people who are worried about the safety of the camp. We like to say that everyone is Shanti Sena (Peacekeeper). The idea is to communicate in such a way that folks doing something non-peaceful, non-respectful, unhealthy, or unsafe will see the error of their ways and choose to get with the program. When something really out of line occurs (a violent individual hitting someone with a club, for example) a Shanti Sena council (consisting in the ideal of all interested parties, as well as some experienced folks from the Shanti Sena Clan to give guidance and physical safety) forms to deal with the issue. If the victim of the violence wishes to press charges, the incident is dealt with accordinly, and the Shanti Sena folks cooperate in turning the perpetrator over to local law enforcement - a controversial move, to be sure, but in some cases unavoidable and sometimes even desirable. If no one wants to see the local authorities involved but a person is considered a danger to the safety of folks in camp, two options are commonly turned to: someone capable of handling the situation volunteers to accompany the offending person 24 hours a day around camp; or the person must leave the gathering and not come back that year.
As per a standing consensus by the Rainbow Family Tribal Council, we don't apply for or sign permits. With the new group use regulations instituted by the Forest Service this year, this has become a difficult position to hold.One regional gathering signed a permit and gathered under a different name than Rainbow. Weird, and lot of people were angry at the folks who signed the permit,but what are ya gonna do? Take away their hippie cards? Anyway, theoretically,if a gathering has a permit, it is by definition not a Rainbow Gathering.
Also, by long tradition, we do not gather anywhere but public land. Occassionallythere may be focussed councils (Thanksgiving Council, regional councils) that happen on private land, but gatherings themselves are always held on public land. Again, if it happens otherwise, it is by definition not a Rainbow Gathering, though the event may be very rainbow in nature otherwise.
We take responsibility for every aspect of the gathering, from set-up to clean-up. We don't ask for help bulldozing roads, getting donations from local charities or food banks. We are self-sufficient in every aspect of our gathering, and responsible for ourselves. Most important, when the gathering is over, many people stay behind to totally clean up the site. No janitors are paid to clean up after folks. Gatherers are expected to use the recycling center set up on site and to pack out what they packed in. The clean up crew takes out all trash to recycling centers and to landfills, then restores and rehabilitates the site. This may involve scarifying the earth to loosen up compacted areas, filling in ruts caused by vehicles, water-barring hilly areas, and reseeding the ground. All shitters and camps are disappeared and naturalized. This is a lot of work folks! If you've never stayed for cleanup, you've never really done a gathering. This is not a dead lot - this is real, this is a labor of love, and it's one of the only reasons, both karmically and politically, that the powers that be haven't put the ax to us long ago.
A Rainbow Gathering is not a rock concert or a platform for speakers. If cars are allowed in the gathering area proper, and if there is amplified music as a central theme, it most certainly is NOT a Rainbow Gathering (the drive-in gathering in Texas was an exception, as we were not allowed to close the road).
If it were up to me to define it, I would say this is the most important aspect of the Gathering: It is a free assembly of individuals who come together to practice peace. The focal point of the Annual Gathering July 1-7 is a coming together in a large circle, each person praying silently in their own way for peace. Most of the regional gatherings also set aside a day for the Silent Circle. A Rainbow Gathering is not a party, although partying certainly happens. It is not just a big hippie campout, although there are lots of counter-culture and new-age types camping in the woods. It is not just the world's largest love-in/be-in/ smoke-in, although a lot of that certainly goes on. For me, without the element of prayer we might as well not gather at all. For me, without the element of the Circle in which we participate, we mights as well have a hippie convention at the Hilton. For me, without the practice of Peaceful Respect and continuing attempts to create harmonyamong each other and all beings of the Earth, me might as well give up any pretense that the human race is evolving.
So, does that make things more clear? You'll probably get as many different answers as you will people answering. Good luck sorting it all out. The annual Rainbow Gathering of the Tribes will take place in the Northwest next July - Oregon or Washington. Stay tuned for directions, which will probably come out about amonth before the gathering!

Protect our Health! Use your own cup, bowl & spoon! Wash them after eating and rinse in bleach-water. Visit C.A.L.M./M.A.S.H. if you feel ill - especially if you have a contagious disease - or are injured. Camp Together - Establish neighborhoods. Community Fires only! ~ Each with 5 gallon water bucket and shovel for Fire Protection. If you are the last to leave a fire PUT IT OUT! Watch your gear: Be Responsible ~ "Tempt Not Lest Ye Be Lifted From." Pets are discouraged but if you must bring them keep them fed, on a leash and out of the kitchens, springs & fights. Clean up their poop. Love them. PACK IT IN - PACK IT OUT !!! Cleanup begins when you arrive. Bring in only what is necessary. There is no janitor here...you are the cleanup crew. Separate Garbage for recycling. Don't litter - Find collection point. Compost in pits only. You are the Gathering! Participate in Shanti Sena, the peace keepers council, and all activities, councils, work crews, workshops. cheap land in the NW?

ive found i may be able to get a 50k loan from the government(im a veteren), and then defualt on the loan, and the government is required to cover the loan...strange i know, but i was wonderin if anyone has shopped around at land prices in washington, oregon ect. been lovin the enviornments of mutantfest, and if i pull this off i would use it for autonomous activities. maybe build strange structures ect...or in case of catastrophe.
any ideas or thoughts?

This is a DIY guide to rigging an election. I was over at www.blackboxvoting.org, (great site) and I was looking over their "Citizen's Toolkit". It was full of decent enough suggestions, but they seemed to miss the most obvious solution: if stealing elections is easy enough for those chumps to do it, then let's do it better than them.

As I researched this article, I've had a growing excitement for the past couple days: this is completely possible. The security exploits are simple, and the only real hurdle is the logistics of scale: how to get a national (or even just statewide) bloodless coup staged quickly and effectively. If I wanted to give a shit about burning Turd I'd be on that tribe but this here be fo Tree Hugging Mutants that know how to party in the arms of the Forest Goddesses.
Damn that forest was beautiful with all the sound systems echoing off eachother and drunk chillins stumbling around in the dark with out flashies.
I wish we could do some more of these parties in the woods and if there are any gonig on post them here and while your at it, why not invite Cirkus Pandemonium to play fire and ariel stunts to liven the occasion!
I love to burn the fire, but I don't need to fry my pale skin the the freaking desert to do it!

Well went to the site of last years AMF..... While the land has recovered really well, its a bitch of a time getting there.... Downed trees scatter the road, and there is a massive sinkhole which took out the road leading up to the road which was the site. Talked to the Sheriff up there and he said it should be fixed by memorial day weekend.

Guess that dosent fix the problem about no springs for the kitchens, and the fact that the site requires everyone to be so spread out. Other than that, we found a great place and had a supreme campout.

Scouting the sandy spot brought too many dangers, the g. camp site still has 2ft snowpack and the other site at lower elevation has the bridge completely washed out. Fux sake.

Northern California seems to have snow aswell at the good sites proposed, however it will be melting within a couple weeks. Same with the Southern Oregon sites I know of.

It was quite a production inluding the queen's concert,
tea party trio, suitcase puppet show of walrus & carpenter
and the jabberwock monstermasks. twas a mad evening
of fun.
the next was a one man show for an intimate audience
of close friends.
it's third year running was the mad tea party with a book
& c.d. to accompany.
the 4th year is set to be in co-operation with
the lucid dream lounge.
this is the culmination of a lifetimes connection to
the writings of Lewis Caroll,
here was my original Idea :I'ts a glam rock opera,
Spacey sci-fi, I like ziggy style, and kabuki japanese
cats, bunraku, noh theatre. this is a description of
a young lewis caroll, in some fanciful asian opium den,
being served and having the hallucination that he
watered down to create alice's adventures in
wonderland. focusing on the bestiary of "Jabberwok"
, the white rabbit, the tea party, and a god-like
presence of the cheshire (cat).
seeking performers, puppet craft, and hosts for
this would bee epic of psychedelic performance art.
follow thee white rabbit...
the set so far
red queen (an original)
white rabbit(+new verses)
the walrus & the carpenter (to music)
I am the walrus (mutant version)
the humpty dump (mix of humpty dance with parts
of eggman & the original poem)
jabberwocky(grunge version)

the inverse set also features some surprizes from
the collective of songwriters (the likes of the hobo gobbelins,
sourmash hug band & accordion plague)

AT THE START OF THE SHOW:
white rabbit makes an appearance & then takes us
"through the rabbit hole". when we hit the bottom
a red queen appears: I'm bored to tears with the likes

at this point a page begins calling forth the appointed
acts,
***still looking for quick cabaret style performances
(2-3 songs) which can work with a wonderland style

when it comes time for the hatter to sing,
he does so off key & tempo, so badly that the
queen shouts: "stop him! he's murdering time!!!"
and a guard roughly ejects the hatter from the "stage".
perhaps a bit of mumbling as the court complains
of the hatter's ruination of the concert.
focus shifts to the tea party set.
mad hatter: Oh bugger! they've broken my watch!
march hare: let me see that watch hatter.
(smears it with a thick layer of butter)
that should do the trick.
hatter: (shakes watch & listens) nope, it's still broken
now, we'll be stuck in tea time forever.
dormouse: play us a song hatter, to help us pass the time
hatter plays white rabbit....
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall

I'm glad to hear people already talking about scouting for next year..... in order to actually follow through though, proper planning is a consideration. So since I am such a methodical Virgo I thought I would help people who are talking on this forum about scouting to help plan it out.... thoughts to consider:

1) Do you have a car or a friend with a car that will give you the key? Start asking your friends now to plan on camping out in the woods for a week or month in July. Get a core group of people together who can be there the whole time, to keep newcomers informed of where has been scouted already, and to see any good sites for comparable reference. Anyone who wants to help in that area but can only come for a day or few can go meet the core group.

2) In order to get some good scouting done, and make it worth your while, you will be in the car driving down roads for several hours each day. How will you pay for the fuel? Start saving or taking collections now. Put up a donation jar at your next party. There is no gas fund for scouters.

3) Do you have a job? How long in advance do you have to ask to take off work? Ask your boss now, so when you do put in for time off, they won't be surprised, and by putting the word out now, your coworkers might decide not to ask for time off when you need it.

4) Where do you want to look? Near home? In that place you always wanted to check out but haven't? Washington? California? Eugene? Slab City? 9th ward? People's opinions vary on this, so go look where you would like it to be, but at the same time don't feel bad if you can't find something good there..... all of the pacific northwest is gorgeous in it's own ways....

That's all the preliminary stuff I could think of to do this far in advance.......if anyone else can think of anything, please add.....

Feel free to use this thread as a meeting ground to find interested people in your area, but plan in private please......

I've got perhaps the greatest Moe!kestra yet lined up to play this Saturday at Someday Lounge in Portland, but we're short a few clarinetists. Though we have some great ones of course, Mr. Staiano has expressed a desire for more.

The only qualification is that you need to be able to read music as well as freely improvise, which leaves me out unfortunately. We're getting together Friday and Saturday 4-6pm to rehearse, then the show itself is Saturday night at 9.

Any and all music-reading improvisational clarinetists, please contact me soon!

Societas Insomnia is a troupe of veteran performers from the subcultures of ritual art, circus, sex, body modification, fire, butoh, and experimental music. We combine these marginalized forms to embody a world of living nightmare.

Our first year of shows; stretching from December 2004 to November 2005; developed a distinctive style of wordless and improvised movement-based theater drawing from the diverse backgrounds of our cast and the free sharing of methods and skills between us. I did meet some of the members of spaz last year when we were in SF and Oakland. If you know of a place i can rent. I open to almost anything what comes along. I'm sure Sam dylan will zombie dan would say a good word for me. or anyone else i travled with over the 2005 summer.

Popup Trailer available for Burning Man

Hi there.

I was recently gifted a reasonably nice popup trailer which i was going to rent/trade to someone to use on the playa.

The camper is a Jayco Dove

It has a little kitchen thingy and sleeps 5 or 6 people. It also has a bike rack on top that will carry 4 bikes.

Conditions:

You gotta get it out there and back from SF. I won't be towing it. It is easy to pull, you can use a small truck or perhaps a station wagon or a car with a burly engine.

It needs a super minor repair. The top cranks up with a crank. The cable which connects to the crank is broken and must be fixed for propper use. I have'nt the time to mess with it personally, but if yer interested, have at it.

Rental fee/trade is negotiable. I'm pretty easy. Ideally a BM ticket would be nice (save my ass the trouble of sneaking in... again...) but I'm open to other offers.

Hey, i was just on the mutantfest.org and it says on the front page that the festival will be in an undisclosed part of the ninth ward in New Orleans!
What the fuck?
That would not be mutant fest in that would be toxic decay camp!
No fucking way!
i don't know who decided this but if they want a festival in new orleans they should start thier own new festival and not call it mutant fest.

I thought there was a lot of discussion about it being in oregon or norhtern cali.
Whoever wants it in new orleans call it something else and have fun, as for the west coast mutants.. unite and stay west coast.

Kid Kamp?

We (PAN-ZEN) have been talking about the need for a kid kamp (since there seems to have been much breeding going on the last couple years!).

We are not able to fully organize this, however, we can supply many toys, some blankets and such, and possibly some kind of shade.

The thought is that a dedicated, safe space could be made for parents to chill with their kidz and kidz could chill with other kidz... This wouldn't be daycare (no one dropping off kidz to avoid responsibility) though, obviously, groups could organize within themselves to have someone watching each others little people....

Anyone want to step up and help make this happen and help provide dedicated space for the little mutants?

A Benefit for The Nightmare Collective

Indeed folks.

I'm performing tonight at a benefit for The Nightmare Collective. This is going to be a gigantic blow-out show, built around a touring group of electronic musicians and disaster relief workers known as SPAZ (Semi-Permanent Autonomous Zone). These are the expatriate Lords of the Oakland warehouse scene, the collective that birthed Nightmare Collective itself, as well as The SPAZ-Port, The Mutant Festival, Circo Mutante, and an absolute shit-ton of incredible music over the past decade. I don't know exactly what they've got in store for us, but past experience would indicate some combination of banging dance-floor experimental Live PA shit, some circus, and a light dose of more ethereal electro-acoustic material. Principally, what they have to offer is a party, but a party put on by hardline wandering art freaks. Also, they wander the Earth helping out at disaster sites such as New Orleans and Bali. Some of the greatest people alive.

Local acts will again include my own band, Nequaquam Vacuum, playing on the roof -- a post-asiatic free improvising ensemble combining my own scrap metal percussion and glossolalia vocals with the multi-instrumental meditations of Travis McAlister, psychedelic Indian classical noise from Brian Crowl on the sitar and jumbusch, the extended flute, recorder, and violin technique of self-taught maestro Dr. Yes, and some combination of our other revolving collaborators (maybe get James Davis out there, or Rale Sidebottom, you know, Nolon Ashley or something)

1985 Iveco EuroTurbo Bio-Diesel Box Truck For Sale

I am selling my house truck... I have had it for about 2 years now. It's currently in Portland at the Nightmare Collective, but I am willing to drive it anywhere on the west coast or near by... It would be great for a group to take to AMF and Burning Man... It sleeps atleast 5 has a small sink and kitchen area with a little wood burning stove...

The convertion on the living space is almost complete...

I havn't converted it to Veggie yet but it has been the plan all along...

Mutantfest Med Tent Needs...

I went through all of the mutantfest med tent stuff, and made a list of things needed to make two med tents.... we need to set up some kind of system to keep track of what is donated and what is not, so that we don't wind up with 10 bottles of aloe and no band-aids. maybe email me if you can bring some of what is needed, and I can say if we need it or not.... or some kind of checklist that people can sign off for..... or whatever. But here is the list... it's kind of long...

- For shitters..... plastic squirt bottles(at least one for each shitter), Gallon jugs of water(at least one, but hopefully a few for each shitter), TP, big bottles of tea tree oil(there can never be enough tea tree oil), little plastic pipettes
- 2 tents you can stand in, 2 lamps with light bulbs, extension cords to borrow, 2 sturdy tables you can bring and take home after fest
- white sheets and red paint
- condoms/lube
- 2 boxes alcohol preps
- 2 boxes gloves (latex or non)
- 1 large bottle of hydrogen peroxide
- 1 bottle aloe vera gel
- 2 bottles of hand sanitizer
- Band-Aids of all shapes, sizes, textures
- 2 large bottles of zinc lozenges
- 1 bottle Echinacea pills
-1 tube of A+D ointment
- 1 tube of povidone iodine ointment
- 1 bottle of isopropyl alcohol
- Gatorade or emergen-c
- Cotton Balls
- cotton swabs
- 2 bottles of saline solution
- menstual pads and tampons
- 2 tubes of Weleda Burn gel
- 1 bottle insect repellant
- Ace Bandages
- 2 scissors

WE DO NOT NEED GAUZE, in fact, we have a lot already, and it would be good to use some before getting more, although, hopefully no one will need to use gauze. We also have enough tape for the time being. We have a bunch of acetomynaphin, but no ibuprofin or aspirin.

A note on bee sting/snake bite kits: we have two kits. One is a suction device. The other is a suction device but also has a cutting tool and tournaquette device. It seems like the more we have of these kits, the better. But people need to know that we do not, and will most likely never have an epipen, so if someone might need one of those, they have to bring their own.

Call to Circus performers/musicians/artists PDX and beyond for traveling roadshow

So I have teamed up with a a few performers I have toured with before and a few new faces to bring to life a grand journey this next summer. Members of the SPAZ circus- Circo Mutante and others are in the midst of putting together a circus project with the intention of touring this comming summer. Right now there are 4 people in a "planning committee" of sorts, and our vision is less than 10 people in a show that infuses the best of sideshow acts, traditional circus skills, fire performance, theatrical activism, street performance, heavy on the musical tip, vaudeville influenced variety show with a merch table of art, zines, screenprinted patches and clothes, and circus gear like fire and juggling equip. As things get more solid we're going to get together a website, record a cd, and have some good photos maybe video clips on the site. We are looking for a few extra circus folk who are interested in working together. Optimally a good addition would be someone with as many facets to there performance ability as possible (i.e. juggler, musician of some type-or willing to ring a cowbell or kazoo from time to time- clown, aerial artist, sideshow acts, acrobat) in addition to interest in prop and costume making, set design, promotional materials, organisational skills and what not. We have guitars, clarinet, trumpet, harmonica, banjo, possibly a homemade calliope piano if not we would like a good accordian player, and we're hoping for a stand up bass, saw, washboard or any other obscure instruments. I am going to do fire performance, stilt walking/dancing, and a few random sideshow spectacles, random clownin and music. This is a collaberative effort and its what we each make it and it may take many different shapes and we are in the process of designing the "show". We are going to put on a circus show as part of a benefit at our warehouse in forest grove- The Nightmare Collective- and if there are any performers who would be interested in collaberating in that show contact me directly and we can see if we click and chat about ideas for a continuing things together. We are practicing and making props out here as we speak- we all live together and talk circus everyday. We have a veggie powered tour bus and intend on hitting destinations like festivals, clubs, bars, community art centers, and a lot of street performance in between and crossing paths with other fellow circus folks and cool bands booking shows together and culminating at Mutant Fest 2006 in August. We will definately be all up and down the west coast with connections in Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Eugene, Northern Cali, Bay Area, Santa Cruz, Monteray, L.A. and further inland perhaps places like Tahoe, Reno, SLC, Boise, Missoula. Depending on route and how far we want to travel we could hit up old connections from last summer in Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Lawrence Kansas, Milwaukee, and Madison Wisconsin. The idea is to have a main show, but a formula that can be rearranged and broken up/improved to accomadate the setting (i.e. street performing to full length theater show) There are some random photos of last summers tour in my photo gallery, as well as the spaz.org "on the road gallery" if your curious. So the first step is to collaberate on shows in portland and the Pacific Northwest area and spend the next 4 months getting ready to hit the road! Also if you would just like to just help us make props and crazy costume stuff but not go on tour we would love the slave labor:)

Those of you who have pondered the deeper meaning of "EnterActive" are well-advised to attend. And to bring goggles, as there may be a bit of a mess.

The Red King is the neo-classical/black metal performance project of Johann Cleereman, also known for his participation in the highly mysterious nomadic clan Corpus Corax. The Red King combines a composer's musical precision with a deep ritual commitment to his alchemic stage process, which often leads to acts of self-mutilation and the consumption of dangerous chemicals during the course of performing his soul-bearing song cycles. My friend Scott drank a goblet of his blood once, and he couldn't stand or speak for about sixteen hours.
Nequaquam Vacuum is a free post-asiatic ensemble who usually build instruments out of scrap metal and found objects. I say "usually" because tonight they will instead be destroying scrap metal and found objects, but still musically. The Vacuum is elated to have founding member Tyler Armstrong back in the fold, having performed their last few shows with the Golden Age trio of Armstrong/McAlister/Mickens as well as members of the rotating cast who have played with the latter two since the literal disappearance of the former (it turned out he was in Turkey). Tonight's guests include Nolon Ashley, Rale Sidebottom, and multi-instrumentalist "Infamous Dangerous Psychopath".
Synchronicity Frequency is the industrial solo effort of Ryan Olsen, who this evening will be creatively DJ-ing the heaviest of metal.
CLICHE AU LAIT (PDX) is a performance Art group operated by JO CASE AND Micah Perry. Since its inception in 2000. One of their intentions is to allow viewers a transcendent experience with art not signified by static objects alone. CLICHE AU LAIT offers opportunities to intervene, predict, or participate. The resulting cooperative creation process affords participants entrance into the actual realm of the art, RATHER THAN OBSERVING SOMEONE ELSES EXPERIENCE OF ART.
Hail and Kiss the Goat present: War Pigs, excerpts from an unfinished musical.
Hail and Kiss the Goat is at the cross roads of Butoh, German industrial improv, Heavy Metal and political satire.
Short and sweet, this performance version of War Pigs is as poignant as the day Black Sabbath penned it.
Sati Fire are a ritual dance troupe headed by Tamara Yeskel and Zenia Brar, who have performed together since 2002 as part of the Pan-Zen Konspiracy Nettwyrk.
Alex Lily's TV Smasher is a large and dangerous machine designed to destroy television sets.
Jonas Nash's Blender of Death is an immense and even-more-dangerous machine built from lawnmower blades and a Volkswagen engine, dedicated to the destruction of works of art.

Like, I performed this year (river), and also in 2004 (tree farm), and 2003 (box canyon rock quarry?), and maybe that's all. But what dates? I'm going crazy man.

AMF opportunites

Moving away from the arguments into a space ov creative development...

I think it would be great to coordinate a bit ov who is able to bring what public supplies. Many ov the camps provide support beyond their own crews... if we can coordinate more, we can make sure folks know where to find what they need.

PAN-ZEN rolls up with
public access to recycling & garbage,
water,
fire (when possible),
garbage bags,
plenty ov shit tickets,
a lost and found,
and a decent amount ov holistic & biomedical first aid (though no where as extensive as the first aid traditionally near spaz).
Depending on the site we often make runs to town to haul out trash, cash in bottles, get odd generator parts, etc… and can pick-up or drop off stuff for others…

If necessary, we are also be willing to create a public latrine near our camp depending on the site... this year we where surrounded by some mighty fine latrines (including our own, which I am still so proud ov -- I love me a good latrine!), so we didn't dig an extra...

What are other camps planning to bring, and how can we coordinate this information and get it to the mutant publick?

So I've been w/ this tribe for a bit, and the only posts that get renewed are the redundant Burner vs. Mutant argument.

With rare exception, the posts are all about how BurningTurd has Vomit/Feces/police/environmental degradation. While I am a burner, and I can't deny that much of that vomit, feces, police, environmental damage occurs... I have to admit ignorance of the other side.

What is a mutant?
If you can only define yourselves through what you are NOT, then I'm curious how Mutants are all that different from what everybody else isn't... or is.

I would like to begin this discussion by stating that I dont claim to have all the answers & nor am I intricately aware of all the details. This is simply the start of a discussion I feel needs to be had. I would also like to add that there is nothing wrong with being succesful & having $ so long as you earned it, & this does not make you a yuppie.
I'm deeply concerned with my community, or what's left of it. It is broken down & ridden with many ills. I'm not specifically speaking of A.M.F., but of the world of freaks in general. There are many people who enjoy looking like a freak & partaking of the scene for all the wrong reasons. There are people who lie, cheat, & steal to get ahead. They are no better then the yuppies who do the same to climb the corporate ladder.
I've met people who enjoy looking like a freak simply to get attention &/or fit in somewhere. I'd like to state here that I have many good friends who look "normal". Being a freak should be about being yourself without regard to what others think, including other freaks. If you feel the need to be the constant center of attention than you should deal with your insecurity issues.
I've met people who lie, cheat, steal, & manipulate to get ahead in some way. I've met people who have stolen other peoples ideas, lied to make themselves look better or more important, & generally be bad people. This behaviour is disrupting the community at large & causing divisiveness. It's pitting freaks upon freaks, & we have enough problems with those outside the community. I find this very disconcerting.
Last but not least is the egocentricity I have witnessed. There are many people who feel they are somehow better than others because of various reasons. Whether it's the band, troupe, tribe, clique, or whatever they may be a part of. These people need to get over themselves & realize without other freaks they have nothing. We must all support each other in whatever way we can. When shit goes down it will be other freaks & family to be there for you. The yuppies who spend $ at our festivals, shows, & performances dont care about us. We're simply entertainment to be gawked at for an evening. We are outside of society & unless we stick together that society will crush us one by one. Remember where you came from & who you are.

Talk is good, but what is better is: scouting! Everyone who has vehicle access should be out scouting regularly! It can't be anywhere until someone finds a specific place for it to be! If you find a nice site, post it here as well as to the other amf website. Talk to people, the vagarious sound systems and performers that want to be there and let them know you've found a place. Take pictures and send it to them.
Some things to look for in a good mutant spot:

*WAAAAY out there - far from stinkin' civilization
*HARD to find - dirt roads keep forces of control at bay, somewhat
*Good Drinking water nearby - them muties are thirsty
*shade - usually translates as "trees"
*poisonous insects ans snakes - alwaya a plus!
*Neighbors - NONE! They will complain.
